Social Networking - More harm than good?

Facebook, myspace, bebo, tumblr... almost everybody as at least one of these social networking sites, Facebook being the most popular.

Facebook has more than 500 million active users. The average user has 130 friends and people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.

Here are some advantages of disadvantages of the social networking site Facebook:

Advantages Of Facebook
  • The interface used by Facebook is simple, easy to use and orderly.
  • Facebook is a public application. As such, it is quite appealing to the younger lot. The public application makes it simples for students to share their lives, whether educational, social, personal or professional in a fun and learning environment.
  • Facebook lets you decide whatever you want to share with whomever you want to, which makes it possible for you to keep your privacy intact.
  • Facebook is also available through WAP enabled mobile phones. So, you can update about the activities going on in your life from practically anywhere. Also, it allows you to be in touch with all your friends, regardless of where you are.
  • Facebook is a great tool to find an old friend. All you need to do is use the search option to find a friend whom you want to reconnect with.
  • Facebook provides a great platform to advertise for business houses. Since the portal serves as the common destination for a diverse network of people, business houses can take the advantage for mass promotion of product or service. Also, the categorization of the groups allows advertisers to advertise as per their target audience.
  • The cost of online advertising on portals like Facebook is lower than conventional methods, and also provides a wider audience and greater visibility.
  • Facebook can also be used as vehicle to promote and discuss social issues. Groups could be formed pertaining to any topic of social importance, and public opinion could be molded by means of discussions.
  • Facebook has made photo sharing an uncomplicated process. You can upload and download photos in no time. The best part of it is that you can access the photographs from your mobile device also.
Disadvantages Of Facebook
  • The interface of Facebook is less enjoyable and could be boring at times, as compared to other social networking sites.
  • Dependence on technological communication tool like Facebook can adversely affect the social communication skills of the youths.
  • Social networking tools can easily become an addiction. It could hamper a student's educational obligations or an employees output at his workplace, which explains as to why most educational institutes and organizations have banned the use of Facebook in their premises.
  • There is always the fear of cyber stalking in Facebook, and chances are that your personal details might land up in wrong hands.
  • Facebook is spoiling the value of relationships, mostly long distance relationships. This is because the relationship is built and maintained through a website and lacks the emotional and physical involvement of an unadulterated relationship.
  • It is mostly seen that people are overjoyed when they outnumber their acquaintances when it comes to friend list. Though the friend list in the networking site keeps going up, how many of the members are your real friends is a question best left unanswered. Remember, friendship is more than just knowing a person over the internet.
So do you think Facebook does more harm to the community than it does good?

Scientists set new download speed record

Researchers have set a new record for the rate of data transfer using a single laser: 26
terabits per second.

At those speeds, the entire Library of Congress collections could be sent down an optical fibre in 10 seconds and the equivalent of 700 DVDs in one second.

Earlier this year, Japanese scientists set a world record sending 109 terabits per second using multiple lasers. But the data rate of 26 terabits per second reported by the group of German, Swiss and UK scientists in today's Nature Photonics is the largest line rate ever recorded using a single light source.

Barclay's Premier League Showdown

Two relegation spots. Five teams. All separated by only a point, who will go down?

20 weeks ago, the table looked like this;
Birmingham were 19th,
Wigan 17th,
West Ham (now relegated) were sitting comfortably in 15th,
Blackburn & Blackpool in mid-table, both on 25 points.

Oh how it's changed. Now, these five teams are stuck at the bottom, with one point between them;
Blackburn - 40points - 15th
Wolves - 40points - 16th
Birmingham - 39points - 17th
Blackpool - 39points - 18th
Wigan - 39points - 19th

Here's an interesting one for you, between these five teams head-to-head, this is what the table would look like:
PPG = Points Per Game

Who do you think will be relegated today?
Do you think the relegated teams will bounce straight back up from the championship next season?
Who deserves to go down and who deserves to stay up?

Fast Food - Which do you prefer?

I haven't even started writing, but I'm now starving after thinking about fast food. We humans love our food, and when we're out and hungry searching for somewhere cheap to eat, we always turn to our trusty fast food chains.

Business wise, McDonald's excels all other fast food markets. A survey states that McDonald's is the most successful, followed by Wendy's, Taco Bell and then Burger King.

McDonald's has an estimate worth of 14billion, that completely overshadows all the others! But does McDonald's overshadow the others in the quality of food?

So this is my question, McDonald's may be the best financially, but what is the best fast food chain out there determined on the quality of the food they provide?

The End of the World?!

Apocalypse - Visual Representation
That's right everybody, apparently the world is going to end tomorrow evening at 6pm (English Time).

According to Harold Camping, an evangelical radio broadcaster from California, and his legion of devotees, May 21, 2011, marks the end of days; or "the rapture", as some prefer this singular take on Christ's second coming. God's chosen will be taken up to heaven, while the rest of us will be wiped out by a series of calamities.

Or this could just be a load of rubbish, as mentioned here in The Telegraph Newspapers article on the 10 dates the world failed to end. This could be another one? The Telegraph newspaper seem to have covered this story and have put together an article about a Christian group predicting judgement day (including a nice little video).

So what do you think? Say goodbye to your loved ones, or carry on living and forget about it? Where do you stand? Comment below.

o2 can't handle their network!

o2 today confirmed reports of a huge mobile network outrage. Not much information has been released by o2, but sources close to o2 have given hints that theft and vandalism has caused this mobile coverage downfall.

Today I had to make plenty of buisness calls and this problem caused major issues throughout my day. o2 are arguably the biggest mobile network out there and with the amount of money they have, surely they can prevent this? Come on, how did vandals even get close enough to carry out this outrage.

If you have been affected, comment below and what do you think should be done?

Do you know whose not winning? Ashton Kutcher.

The hit CBS show, Two and a Half Men, recently postponed due to the Charlie Sheen scandals, welcomes a new face. Kutcher is coming back to the TV Sitcom world, it's been a while, yeh five years. "I can't replace Charlie Sheen, but I'm going to work my ass off to entertain the hell out of people" says Kutcher. In reaction, Charlie thinks they made a good choice & still believes the show must go on.

To be honest, don't see how this guy can replace such a wild and wacky, come on what good stuff has he done since the butterfly effect? He's just going to get millions of pounds from reading scripts.....

What do you think?
