Researchers have set a new record for the rate of data transfer using a single laser: 26
terabits per second.
At those speeds, the entire Library of Congress collections could be sent down an optical fibre in 10 seconds and the equivalent of 700 DVDs in one second.
Earlier this year, Japanese scientists set a world record sending 109 terabits per second using multiple lasers. But the data rate of 26 terabits per second reported by the group of German, Swiss and UK scientists in today's Nature Photonics is the largest line rate ever recorded using a single light source.

We use phone lines they use optical fibers or generaly light. In phone you have 1 bit of information (there is eletricity or there is not) with light you have whole spectrum of wave lenght.
So don't compare it with our net speed :P
